Court turns down Rahul Gandhi's 'Stay on Conviction' Petition

Kathmandu: An Indian court in Gujarat has turned down the petition of Rahul Gandhi focusing on a stay of conviction in the Modi defamation case.

This has arisen the uncertain state of whether Gandhi will get permission to compete in the upcoming election or not.

A Gujrat court convicted Gandhi of defaming Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the Modi community, during a speech in 2019, last month.

The court found Gandhi guilty in the defamation case and condemned him to 2 years imprisonment. Gandhi had signaled a popular Indian businessman having the Modi surname in his speech. He had questioned how come all the thieves have the last name, Modi.

The Congress, Gandhi's party, said that the party would go for an appeal regarding the decision in Gujarat High Court on Friday.

Gandhi also lost his parliamentary position after being punished with 2 years of imprisonment.
