Women’s Euro 2025: England vs Spain - who will bag Champions Trophy

Kathmandu: The ongoing 14th edition of UEFA Women’s Euro 2025, Switzerland has got its finalist nations that are England, known as the Lionesses, and Spain.

Both teams will play off for the trophy on Sunday at St Jakob-Park, Basel. To reach the final, the Lionesses beat Italy by 2-1, while Spain edged past Germany by 1-0.

Roller coaster ride for England Lionesses

Defending Euro Champions, the Lionesses, were placed in Group C, alongside France, the Netherlands and Wales. Their Euro campaign began with a disappointing start as they lost to France.

France beat the Lionesses 2-1 in their opening group stage match. Losing the match of their group stage, they faced a threat of elimination. To keep their hopes alive for the quarter finals, they needed to beat the Netherlands and Wales.

The Lionesses thrashed the Netherlands in their second group match by 4-0 and in the final group match, they easily defeated Wales by 6-1, booking a place in the quarter finals.

In the quarter finals against Sweden, the Lionesses were almost on the verge of getting eliminated. As the Lionesses were 2 goals behind, luck sneaked to their side, as they managed to equalise in the 79th minute and 81st minute. The match went into a penalty shoot-out, where the Lionesses won by 3-2, earning a place in the semi finals.

Likewise, in the semi-final match, the Lionesses were 1 goal behind until the injury time after Italy took the lead in the 33rd minute. But a similar story unfolded, and in the 96th minute (injury time also known as added time), the Lionesses managed to equalize. The match went into extra time and in the 119th minute the 2nd goal sealed their place in the final.

This is England’s fourth appearance in the Euro final, having reached it previously in 1984, 2009, and 2022.

Undefeated World Champions — Spain

FIFA World Champions Spain were placed in Group B, alongside Italy, Belgium, and Portugal. They began their Euro 2025 campaign with a commanding 5-0 win over Portugal. Their unbeaten streak continued with a 6-2 victory against Belgium, followed by a 3-1 win over Italy.

In the quarter-finals, Spain easily defeated Switzerland 2-0, advancing to a semi-final clash with Germany. The match went into extra time, where Spain knocked out the Germans to become the first team to reach the final.

This is Spain’s first-ever appearance in a Euro final, having previously reached the quarter-finals in 2013, 2017, and 2022.

England-Spain showdown rekindles memories of 2023 World Cup final

The Euro Women’s final between England and Spain rekindles memories of the 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup Final in Sydney, Australia, where Spain claimed their first World Cup title by defeating the Euro champions 1-0.

So, this Sunday, the question remains:

Will the Lionesses defend their title for the second time? Or will the World Cup champions reign supreme again?
