Kathmandu: The historic Devi Naach (Goddess Dance), a 300-year-old tradition, has once again been performed in Gokarneshwor.

Traditionally held every year on Vijaya Dashami, the dance is believed to have originated during the reign of King Mandev in the 5th century. Once a regular feature of local festivities, the performance was discontinued in 1981 (2038 BS) due to a shortage of performers and resources.

After a 37-year hiatus, the cultural tradition was revived in 2074 BS through the efforts of local youths. Since then, the dance has been performed annually and has regained its place in the community’s religious and cultural calendar.

The Devi Naach begins on the day of Vijaya Dashami and continues to be performed during various festivals until the month of Magh, preserving a rich legacy of devotion, art, and local identity.
