School closed in Kagbeni after disaster triggers damages to property

Kathmandu: Classes at Janashakti Secondary School at Kagbeni in Baragunj Muktichhetra Rural Municipality-4 of Mustang district have been closed as the recent flooding caused damages to the physical property there.
The flooding that occurred in Kagkhola (river) on August 13 washed away buildings of Janashakti Secondary School, ward office, police post, monastery, temple, road, and bridges. Likewise, the flood destroyed 29 houses and caused partial damage to 13 houses.
School teacher Manbir Kisan said that the flood damaged the playground, rooms, and hostel buildings of the school. The classes will remain closed until August 25. The decision to close the classes was taken in coordination with the rural municipality.
'Sand has been amassed in the school building and playground. The road is muddy. Running classes is not likely until the supply of drinking water, electricity, foodstuffs, and other services are restored,' Kisan added. The flood also inundated two rooms used by the teachers for their residences.
Of the total 200 students, altogether 140 students are enjoying residence facilities. Chairman of rural municipality Rinjin Gurung said that they are working to identify the flood-hit properties and protect them, if possible. The locals and security officials are working to clear the debris, Gurung added. 'We are working to restore drinking water and power supply,' he said.
