Kathmandu: Hindu women devotees are celebrating Haritalika Teej by worshipping Lord Shiva.

According to religious belief, worshipping Lord Shiva and Parvati and fasting on Teej brings happiness, peace, and wellness to the family.

Teej is celebrated on Bhadra Shukla Tritiya. According to Hindu scriptures, during the Satya Yuga, Parvati attained Lord Shiva as her husband by performing penance at Gaurighat in the Pashupat area. This event marks the beginning of fasting during Haritalika Teej.

The Story Behind Haritalika’s Fast

Teej is celebrated on Bhadra Shukla Tritiya. According to Hindu scriptures, during the Satya Yuga, Parvati attained Lord Shiva as her husband by performing penance at Gaurighat in the Pashupat area.

Parvati’s father, Himalaya, tried to arrange her marriage with Vishnu, but Parvati was against it. She shared her concerns with her friends. After hearing her troubles, her friends secretly took her away and hid her in a secluded place.

While in hiding, Parvati began fasting. Through her deep devotion, she was eventually blessed with Lord Shiva as her husband. It is believed that the tradition of fasting on Haritalika Teej began from this event.

On this day, large crowds of devotees gather at temples dedicated to Lord Shiva across the country. Long queues of worshippers can also be seen at temples like Pashupatinath, Dattatraya, and Gokarneshwor.
