Kathmandu: Sushila Karki visited Singha Durbar on Sunday, marking her first official visit since being appointed head of the interim government on Friday.

With the original Prime Minister’s Office building at Singha Durbar destroyed by demonstrators, Karki will now discharge her duties from the newly established office inside the recently built Ministry of Home Affairs building. Earlier in the day, she visited Lainchaur and offered garlands at the martyrs’ memorial.

Karki was appointed the interim head of the government following the resignation of KP Sharma Oli as prime minister in the wake of Gen Z-led protests on September 8 and 9 (Bhadra 23 and 24). Her name was proposed by the youth protesters, who took to the streets demanding an end to corruption, nepotism, favoritism, and misgovernance.

She was sworn into office by President Ram Chandra Poudel on Friday evening. Later that night, Karki recommended the dissolution of the House of Representatives. President Poudel has since announced that the next elections will be held on March 5 (Falgun 21).
