Goat and Sheep supply rises in Kathmandu as Dashain begins (Photo Feature)

Kathmandu: With Dashain approaching, the supply of goats, including Chyangra goats from Mustang, and sheep in the Kathmandu Valley increases significantly every year. This year is no exception.
Due to the high demand for meat during Dashain, traders have made early preparations, bringing in goats and sheep from various districts. According to traders, the number of goats and sheep entering the Valley has seen a remarkable rise since last Saturday.
Goat traders at Khasi Bazaar in Balkhu report that under normal circumstances, around 8,000 to 10,000 goats enter the Valley weekly. However, during festivals like Dashain, 5,000 to 6,000 goats and sheep are brought into the capital daily.
This year, sheep are being supplied in large numbers from the Himalayan districts, while goats are arriving from the Hilly and Terai-Madhesh regions. Sheep mostly come from Mustang, Manang, Dolpa, Humla, and Mugu, while goats are supplied from Sindhuli, Dhanusha, Siraha, Saptari, Bara, Parsa, Makwanpur, and other districts.
The price of live sheep this year has reached Rs. 1,200 to Rs. 1,250 per kilogram, while goats are being sold at Rs. 650 to Rs. 700 per kilogram. Traders say that although supply has increased, demand remains high, which has led to a rise in prices.
