Kathmandu: With the start of Dashain, the swishing sound of the traditional linge ping (bamboo swing) — “sararar… chachahui…” — has begun to echo through villages and towns.

There is a belief that one must leave the ground at least once during Dashain, which is why people of all ages make sure to play on the swing at this time.

The linge ping holds special importance during Dashain. In villages, it is a tradition for youths to come together and set up swings in courtyards, at crossroads, on hilltops, and in open spaces.

However, with rapid urbanization, technological development, and shrinking social ties, the charm of swings is now visible only in a few places in cities.

Inside the Kathmandu Valley, too, only a handful of bamboo swings can be seen in settlements. Children can be seen enjoying themselves on a swing at Bhairav Chaur in Gokarneshwar Municipality.
